As this year’s sponsor, the locally owned and operated electrical contractor is helping to illuminate the park in a festive glow, continuing a legacy of collaboration and community pride that spans decades.

The partnership between Westerner Park and Triple A Electric is grounded in a rich history. Malcolm Hough, founder of Triple A Electric, served as a past president and board member at Westerner Park, playing a significant role in the construction of the Marchant Crane Centrium. His contributions to the project stand as a proud testament to his commitment to the park and the Red Deer community. This season, that legacy lives on through Triple A Electric’s sponsorship of Westerner Park’s Christmas lights, bringing holiday cheer to families across Central Alberta.

“We are incredibly grateful to Triple A Electric for this holiday gift that lights up our park and our community,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “Triple A Electric’s legacy with Westerner Park is one of dedication and generosity, and their support this season adds a meaningful layer to our Christmas light tradition.”

Triple A Electric has been a staple in Central Alberta since 1962, delivering quality electrical and related services across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. As proud members of the Red Deer community, their team is excited to help make this year’s Christmas light display a truly special experience for all.

“We’re pleased to carry on my grandfather’s legacy of giving back and it’s a privilege to bring that spirit to the community,” said Jared Hough, President, Triple A Electric Ltd.

Westerner Park invites everyone to come and enjoy this special “gift” of a beautifully illuminated landscape. Thanks to Triple A Electric, the Christmas light display promises to be brighter and more magical than ever.

Westerner Park Announces the Return of Professional Rodeo to Red Deer https://www.westernerpark.ca/2025/11/28/westerner-park-announces-the-return-of-professional-rodeo-to-red-deer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=westerner-park-announces-the-return-of-professional-rodeo-to-red-deer Fri, 28 Nov 2025 21:02:42 +0000 https://www.westernerpark.ca/?p=2740 Westerner Park is proud to announce the return of professional rodeo to Red Deer with the launch of the Red Deer Pro Rodeo, taking place May 21 to 23, 2026, at the Marchant Crane Centrium. This new event marks an important milestone for the region and brings rodeo energy back to a community that has long celebrated its western heritage and its connection to the sport.

As one of the first professional rodeos on the 2026 circuit, the Red Deer Pro Rodeo is positioned to draw top rodeo athletes and strong fan support early in the season. The event builds on Central Alberta’s deep roots in western culture and its reputation as a proud and knowledgeable rodeo community.

Westerner Park CEO Shelly Flint says the decision to bring rodeo back was shaped directly by community feedback. “Over the last few years, we have listened closely to our community, our partners, and our guests,” says Flint. “And what we heard was clear. Central Alberta is ready for something bold, electric, and uniquely ours. There has been a space in the spirit of the region waiting for the kind of energy and excitement that only rodeo brings. Today, we are proud to respond to that passion by bringing a professional rodeo back to Red Deer, built with our community and for our community.

The Red Deer Pro Rodeo has been designed to honour the traditions of rodeo while creating an event that reflects Central Alberta’s identity. Rodeo Committee Lead Scott Wyzykoski says the committee’s focus has been on building an event that feels authentic and true to the region. “This is not about reinventing the sport, it is about bringing it home,” he says. “Red Deer has always been a rodeo city. The fans get loud, they show up, and they know the sport. The athletes feel that. We are bringing back a pro rodeo that fits this community, honours its roots, and has the staying power to grow year after year.”

Canadian Professional Rodeo Association CEO Denny Phipps expressed strong support for the event.
“We are so excited to have a rodeo in Red Deer early in our season. This event will be one that helps contestants get a jump start on the year, and with the deep rodeo history in Central Alberta, we look forward to seeing large crowds as we roll into the summer.”

Westerner Park also acknowledges the meaningful contributions of Principal Donors John and Heather Donald, whose generosity has supported the launch of the Red Deer Pro Rodeo and reflects their continued commitment to strengthening Central Alberta’s event landscape.

The Red Deer Pro Rodeo is also made possible through the support of early partners and founding sponsors who stepped forward to help bring this event to life.

This event is being built for the athletes, for the fans, and for the region. Red Deer understands rodeo, and the energy here is something special. That support is what will make this event stand out.”

To keep the excitement going throughout the weekend, Westerner Park will host a nightly Music Cabaret in the adjacent pavilion following each rodeo performance. The cabarets are designed to extend the visitor experience, encourage overnight stays, and create a festival atmosphere that celebrates the spirit of Central Alberta.

Westerner Park’s New Ice Plant Keeps Red Deer’s Hockey Tradition Strong https://www.westernerpark.ca/2025/11/12/westerner-parks-new-ice-plant-keeps-red-deers-hockey-tradition-strong/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=westerner-parks-new-ice-plant-keeps-red-deers-hockey-tradition-strong Wed, 12 Nov 2025 22:10:36 +0000 https://www.westernerpark.ca/?p=2651 Westerner Park is proud to announce the completion of a major facility upgrade with the installation of a new ice plant at the Marchant Crane Centrium. The $1.5 million project, funded equally through a Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant and the Westerner Foundation, ensures the long-term sustainability of the Centrium and supports the future of ice sports and events in Central Alberta.

The new ice plant replaces the original 32-year-old system and was relocated outdoors to enhance safety. The upgraded plant is also more energy-efficient, reducing environmental impact while improving reliability. Following an extensive review and tours of other facilities across Alberta, relocating the plant to the southeast corner of the Marchant Crane Centrium was determined to be the most efficient and responsible solution.

“This project was an important step in keeping the Marchant Crane Centrium strong for the community,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “Our partnership with the Red Deer Rebels and the support of both CFEP and the Westerner Foundation made it possible. Together, we’re ensuring Central Alberta continues to have a great place to gather, compete, and cheer — that’s what community is all about.”

The project was completed on schedule and in time for the 2025 Red Deer Rebels season, marking another significant investment in maintaining safe, reliable, and energy-efficient facilities at Westerner Park. The new system provides a more consistent, reliable ice surface for players, fans, and community events year-round.

Much of the work on the project was completed by Central Alberta-based trades and suppliers, keeping investment close to home and supporting the local economy. This project reflects Westerner Park’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, modern, and welcoming spaces for community events, sports, and entertainment.

“Red Deer has a proud hockey tradition,” said Merrick Sutter, Executive Vice President, Red Deer Rebels. “The Marchant Crane Centrium has been home to so many great moments. Seeing this kind of investment ensures hockey—and the community that supports it—remains strong for years to come.”

With more than 1.5 million visitors annually, the partnership shines a spotlight on a bold, homegrown brand that shares Westerner Park’s commitment to community, sustainability, and Alberta pride.

What makes this partnership stand out is Legend Water’s innovative approach to hydration: 100% canned water. By choosing aluminum cans instead of single-use plastic bottles, Legend Water is reducing waste and offering an eco-friendly option that aligns with Westerner Park’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

“At Westerner Park, we believe that supporting local companies is one of the strongest ways we can invest in our community,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “Partnering with Legend Water not only means providing our guests with a refreshing experience, it also reflects our dedication to sustainability and to showcasing the incredible talent growing right here in Alberta.”

Legend Water is equally excited about the collaboration.

“Being chosen as the exclusive water provider for Westerner Park is a milestone for Legend Water,” said James Pearce, CEO of Legend Water Co. “As a young, local company, this partnership gives us the opportunity to put canned water — a more sustainable choice — in the hands of hundreds of thousands of Albertans. Together, we’re building momentum for a community that values local innovation and the environment.”

The partnership underscores Westerner Park’s role as a community hub, ensuring guests experience not only world-class events but also products that reflect local values, environmental responsibility, and pride of place. Beyond quenching thirst, Westerner Park and Legend Water are exploring future opportunities for co-branded initiatives, guest experiences, and community-driven activations.

The band’s sixth studio album, Haven, is already being hailed as their most ambitious project yet. Built around Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey,” the album takes listeners on a cinematic ride through thunderous anthems, sweeping orchestral moments, and intimate reflections. Tracks like A Normal Life, Lightning and Thunder, and Worlds Collide showcase the band’s signature blend of theatrical flair and heart-pounding rock, while songs like Nights Like These strip it all back to reveal the raw emotion at the core of their music.

For Marianas Trench fans, this tour is more than just a concert — it’s a chance to step inside the band’s boldest creative vision yet. Each performance promises to immerse audiences in a story-driven setlist, complete with powerful visuals and the kind of high-energy stagecraft that has cemented the group’s reputation as one of Canada’s premier live acts.

We’re excited to welcome Marianas Trench to Red Deer,” said Ian Allan, General Manager, Event & Business Development at Westerner Park. “This is one of Canada’s most dynamic live bands, and having them on our stage at the Marchant Crane Centrium is a big win for the community. It’s going to be a night fans will be talking about long after the final encore.”

The December 4 performance is expected to draw fans from across Alberta and beyond, further cementing Red Deer as a vibrant entertainment hub. With the Marchant Crane Centrium’s state-of-the-art facilities and Westerner Park’s ongoing commitment to hosting world-class events, this concert is poised to deliver an unforgettable experience for both longtime fans and first-time concertgoers.

Westerner Days 2025 Wraps Up with Community Spirit, Big Talent, and Lasting Memories https://www.westernerpark.ca/2025/07/21/westerner-days-2025-wraps-up-with-community-spirit-big-talent-and-lasting-memories/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=westerner-days-2025-wraps-up-with-community-spirit-big-talent-and-lasting-memories Mon, 21 Jul 2025 18:09:53 +0000 https://www.westernerpark.ca/?p=2416 Mother Nature threw a few curveballs, but that didn’t stop Westerner Days 2025 from serving up five amazing days of fun, connection, and pure community pride. From the first beat of the parade to the final boom of fireworks, Red Deer’s spirit was out in full force!

“Westerner Days is a reflection of the community we’re proud to serve. It’s not just about entertainment—it’s about connection,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “We are honoured to host this celebration that brings families, neighbours, businesses, and visitors together. It’s our privilege to create a space where Central Alberta’s spirit truly comes alive.”

The week kicked off in true Western fashion with a lively downtown parade. Crowds lined the streets to cheer on floats from local organizations, schools, and businesses. You could feel the energy; children waving, music playing, and that unmistakable sense of summer tradition returning once again.

Over at the main stage, the nights were nothing short of electric. On Friday, Canadian rock icon Sass Jordan brought down the house with a high-powered, nostalgic set. Then on Saturday, Alberta’s own Corb Lund took the stage, weaving stories and songs that struck a deep chord with fans who grew up on his music. It felt like the perfect mix of local pride and world-class talent.

Over five engaging performances, the RCMP Musical Ride captivated visitors with its elegance and precision. Each show was preceded by a crowd-pleasing demonstration from the RCMP Police Dog Service, showcasing the skill and teamwork behind their vital work. Together, they offered a unique glimpse into the history and service behind these iconic symbols of Canadian heritage.

But some of the most special experiences didn’t happen on stage at all. Pancake breakfasts and BBQs popped up across the city, thanks to local businesses and service clubs. Office windows were decorated, storefronts were dressed for the occasion, and Red Deer came alive in every corner—not just at Westerner Park.

One of the most meaningful highlights this year was the return of “Share the Fair” visit to Ronald McDonald House. Members of the RCMP Musical Ride, alongside entertainers like Doo Doo the Clown and illusionist Aaron Matthews, brought a little piece of the fair to families staying close to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

We were also honoured to welcome Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who joined the Kickoff Luncheon as Guest of Honour. Her participation underscored the pride Albertans feel in celebrating community traditions like Westerner Days

Although the final round of the North American Pony Chuckwagon and Chariot Races was sidelined by weather, the events that did go ahead were packed with thrilling competition and high energy. We celebrated the winners based on those early heats: Marvin Hubl representing Willow Butte Cattle Company was named Pony Chuckwagon Champion, sponsored by BrokerLink Insurance; Darren Twerdochlib, driven by Brett Dubuc and representing Vision Credit Union, took home Chariot Champion honours, sponsored by Bettenson’s Sand and Gravel; and Dallas Langevin of Independent Controls Services earned Best Dressed Team, sponsored by Speedpro Signs.

From morning to night, Westerner Days buzzed with activity.  The monster truck roaring to life, lumberjacks showcasing their skill, kids laughing at the petting zoo, and the midway filled with music, lights, and cheers. Each evening ended with a bang as fireworks lit up the sky and families celebrated together. Whether on stage, in the stands, or out in the community, Westerner Days 2025 brought people together, creating moments of joy, pride, and shared tradition that reminded us all why this celebration matters.

We can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Westerner Days Celebrates the Heart and Talent of Over 400 Young Artists https://www.westernerpark.ca/2025/06/26/westerner-days-celebrates-the-heart-and-talent-of-over-400-young-artists/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=westerner-days-celebrates-the-heart-and-talent-of-over-400-young-artists Thu, 26 Jun 2025 22:06:43 +0000 https://www.westernerpark.ca/?p=2368 June 26, 2025 | Red Deer, AB

Westerner Park is proud to celebrate the incredible creativity of local students through its 2025 Coloring and Poster Contests, hosted in collaboration with Red Deer Public Schools and Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools.

This year saw an outpouring of imagination and artistic expression, with 450 coloring submissions from Kindergarten to Grade 7, and 14 powerful posters submitted by middle and high school students. Students in the coloring contest worked from a Westerner Park–provided activity sheet, bringing it to life with colour, creativity, and personality. Meanwhile, the poster contest challenged middle and high school students to explore the themes of “community” and “celebration,” resulting in bold, heartfelt artwork that reflected what connection and pride look like in Red Deer.

“To say this was an easy decision—it wasn’t,” said Thea McMechan, Business Development Manager at Westerner Park. “We were so impressed by the talent across all grade levels that we simply couldn’t narrow it down—so we expanded the number of winning entries to recognize more of these amazing young artists.”

While individual winners cannot be named due to privacy, the selected winning artwork will be prominently featured on Westerner Park’s digital screens across the grounds during Westerner Days. In addition, every single submitted entry will be proudly showcased in the Parkland Pavilion for all attendees to enjoy. As a token of recognition, winners will receive RAD Passes or general admission passes to Westerner Days, based on where they placed.

In the same spirit of celebration, Westerner Park also gifted free admission passes to every Grade 5 graduate from Red Deer Public Schools and every Grade 6 graduate from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. This initiative recognizes these important milestones and invites students to be part of the community celebration at Westerner Days.

“At the heart of everything we do is community,” said Shelly Flint, CEO of Westerner Park. “Whether it’s showcasing the creativity of young artists or recognizing important milestones for students, these initiatives are all about celebrating kids, supporting families, and creating joyful connections across our region.”

Westerner Park invites everyone to visit the Parkland Pavilion during Westerner Days to view the full student art showcase and experience the energy, imagination, and pride that Red Deer’s youth bring to the community. Visitors are encouraged to share their favourite pieces on social media by tagging @WesternerPark and using #WesternerDaysArt to help celebrate these young artists online.

Join us for Westerner Days, July 16-20.
